Angler: Lee Williams
Kayak Model: Drifter
Species: Spadefish
Weight: 4lb 10oz
date: July 29 '08
Location: Chesapeake Bay
Details: I noticed that there was no category for spadefish. We had been getting into some medium sized ones and I thought I could start the record. The day before I landed a 16"er but didn't have my hand scales. Lee and I headed out to catch at least another 16"er. I landed the first one and it weighed in at 4lb 5oz. If you have noticed, I have set a few records and Lee has broken them within the next week. He did it with the stripers and the red drum. The trend continued on this same day. Lee landed a 4lb 10oz spade 20 minutes later. Records are set to be broken, and its even cooler when you fishing partner breaks them.

I don't think we have those on the West Coast but that looks like a big one. What do they bite on? How is the fight? With the broad sides, it looks like it would be a good battle. Do you release or eat them?

they are a real mean battler, we use ligh tackle, 15 to 20lb line. we catch'em on clam. they school up around the pilings of the chesapeake bay bridge tunnel. on clear water days we can totaly see them and dangle a small slimy clam baited jig head down to them.

its fishbowl fishing.

the fight is tough.
they pull us around and through the pilings almost everytime.
i tag and release all of mine, but they are good eating and we can keep four a day.

Angler: Michael Poirier
Kayak Model: Prowler 13
Species: Spadefish
Weight: 6lb 12oz
date: July 29 '08
Location: Chesapeake Bay
Details: Mike obliterated Lee’s record with one. We found a bigger school of spades. Lee and I both hooked up with ones this size, mine wrapped me up in the pilings and Lee’s pulled the hook. This might hold till next year, the spades will leave the bay soon.
